The Everyday Witch Tarot, penned by Deborah Blake, Illustrated by Elisabeth Alba, and published by Llewelyn Publications, is a fun and whimsical Tarot deck, featuring mostly young Witches with black pointy hats, striped leggings, broomsticks, and black cats. These fun features make the deck adorable, without being cheesy.
Regardless of its Witchy theme, there’s no need to identify as Wiccan to enjoy this deck. I don’t consider myself Wiccan, but I love this adorable deck, and give professional readings with it, on a weekly basis. I might add, that this deck is Rider-Waite-Smith based, so it will be easy to read for Readers familiar with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck’s traditional card meanings.
Llewelyn has published their Everyday Witch Tarot deck, like so many of their newer decks, as a deck and book kit. The magnetic flap box is large enough to house a good sized, and therefore actually readable book. The deck in nestled into an internal compartment, with a ribbon for easy ejecting.
The beautifully borderless cards (love the new borderless card publishing trend) are colored in muted jewel tones, on cardstock of a decent quality. The cards’ glossy finish, makes them glide easily when shuffling, and the deck’s size fits nicely in the hand.
The design of the back of the cards is also whimsical, featuring a pointy black hat, a broomstick, and a black cat on a cobalt blue and star-studded background. There is nothing I don’t love about the visuals of this deck.
The Guide to the Everyday Witch Tarot companion book features a glossy large color image of each card, with an appropriate quote for the card, beneath the image. On the facing page there is a description of the card, and author Blake’s intended meaning. I appreciate the detailed description of the card, because it points out details I might have missed at first glance.
Blake then follows with a section labeled, Things to Consider, offering helpful advice if this card, should come up in your reading. Most helpful, is the phrase at the top of this page that actually summarizes Blake’s advice detailed in the, Things to Consider section.
I also love that Blake has included a Notes page, at the end of each card’s section, for the Reader’s personal notations for the card. This is helpful for Readers who tend to develop their own intuitive meanings for specific cards.
The energy of this deck is light and bright, as compared to the heaviness and serious quality of other Witch, and Pagan themed decks. Even the traditionally fear evoking cards, the Death, Devil, Tower, and 10 of Swords cards in this deck are much less ominous, as in other more serious decks.
Nonetheless, despite its whimsy, I find this deck to reveal accurate insights into my reading clients’ situations in a softer, yet no nonsense manner.
Due to its whimsical theme, and absence of nudity, the Everyday Witch Tarot deck lends itself well to reading for children, and at family parties. Additionally, its softer energy makes it well suited to reading for anyone who is a bit wary of Tarot.
Both young, and old reading clients, with an intact sense of humor, will enjoy being read with this deck. I hope you will give this whimsical and Witchy deck a try, and find that you love it as much as I do. Happy Taroting!
