The Mermaid Tarot deck, created by best-selling author, Leeza Robertson, and illustrated by award winning artist, Julie Dillon is a journey into the watery world of legendary creatures known as Mer-folk (Mermaids, Mermen, and Merchildren).
Mer-folk are known to be beautiful, part human, but mostly fish, able to survive underwater, but not on dry land.
Mermaids, in particular, have been observed by seafarers for millennia frolicking among the waves, sometimes saving drowning humans, and other times stranding sailors and their vessels upon the rocks with their irresistible siren song.
Though most legendary encounters have been with Mermaids, they must have had mates and children, in order for the species to have continued to thrive throughout the ages.
Therefore, Robertson includes all members of the Mer-folk family in her Mermaid Tarot deck; Mermaids, Mermen, Merchildren, the sweet, the playful, and the downright mischievous.
The Mermaid Tarot Deck Kit
The Mermaid Tarot deck, as most decks published by Llewelyn Publications in recent years, comes packaged in a sturdy magnetic closure box, with its deck nestled in an internal compartment, beneath a good sized companion book.
The cards of the Mermaid Tarot, as is currently trending for new and updated decks, are borderless. As I’ve said before, I love this trend! Tarot deck publishers, keep these borderless decks coming!
The colors of the artwork are slightly muted jewel toned and the card finish is glossy. The card stock is thin, but their slickness and almost plastic quality make them durable and glide easily in shuffling. Additionally, the deck size is great for smallish hands.
The Imaginative World of Mer-folk
The Mermaid Tarot cards depict the energy of the story of our life events, lessons, pitfalls, and wins as is intrinsically expressed by the Tarot, but in an especially beautiful and whimsical way.
Robertson confesses, though not initially a Mermaid enthusiast, her love of the Sea inspired her to create the Mermaid Tarot deck. Then, as she delved into the project of creating this deck, she came to love the folklore of the Sea, and its Mer-folk creatures.
Artist, Dillon’s imaginitive artwork captures Robertson’s vision of a tangible world of Mer-folk, and its inhabitants as magical, yet believable. Rather then cartoonish, the bodies, facial expressions, and activities of the Mer-folk figures appear quite human like.
Although there are whimsical motifs among many of these cards, as in the 3 of Cup‘s young Mermaids having an underwater tea party, Tarot’s traditionally considered negative cards (Death, Devil, Tower, 10 of Swords) do have the required dark connotation to them.
Due to the light and shade of these cards, this deck is suitable for all types of Tarot reading topics, from the mundane to the serious.
The Mermaid Tarot Companion Book
The Mermaid Tarot’s 274 glossy paged companion book is of ample size (5.5”x 8”), and thus the print is actually readeable! I was able to read this book without the magnifying glass necessary for reading those tiny white companion booklets of the Tarot decks of yore.
My aging eyesight loves that this companion book depicts each card with a full-page color pic. There is also a description of the card, as well as the upright and the reversed meaning intended by the author for each card.
Robertson includes four of her own spreads in the companion book; the “Daily Journal Prompt Spread,” the “Two Heads are Better Than One Spread,” the “What, Where, How Three-Card Spread,” and the ”Four Elements Spread.”
Author included spreads are customary in companion books these days. However, uncommon to companion books are the 3 helpful spells that Roberts has included in this book, one each for healing, love, and money. What could be more helpful?
Summing Up
Personally, I love this deck, and highly recommend it. I have used it quite a bit for my own and professional client readings, and find its energy to both flow smoothly and to read accurately.
I hope you too will take the Mermaid Tarot deck for a swim, pun intended, and find that you love frolicking with these magical, mystical Mer-folk as much as I do. Happy Taroting!
